Contrast Controls
|
|
A contrast ratio, for projectors, is the amount of light (in lumens) that a
projector outputs when showing pure white (IRE 100) divided by the amount of
light that is output when showing absolute black (IRE 0). This can also be
stated as the difference between the brightest parts of and image and the
darkest. For example, let's say that the contrast ratio for a given projector
is 2000:1. The output for the color white is 2000 times brighter than that of
black (all projectors still output some light even when projecting absolute
black). Good black and white contrast from a projector is essential to capturing
detail in very dark scenes.
The contrast control that you will find in a projector's menu screen will
actually control the bright areas of your image. This is a bit counter-intuitive.
Higher brightness added to the image can make an image look washed out, just
as too little brightness can make the image too dark. There is a fine line
making in adjustments on a projector. We suggest using a home theater picture
adjustment DVD such as Avia or Video Essentials to help you make proper adjustments.
